What is AI search, and why does it matter for ecommerce?

Short answer

AI search is when people use an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot — to research and decide what to buy, instead of scrolling a page of blue links. It matters for ecommerce because the assistant often names a short list of specific products or brands, so being one of the sources it draws on increasingly decides who gets discovered.

The shift from links to answers

Classic search returns a list of links and leaves the choosing to you. AI search returns a synthesised answer — often a ranked short list of products, tools or brands — with a handful of cited sources beneath it. The discovery moment moves from 'which link do I click' to 'which sources did the assistant trust enough to base its answer on'.

For a shopper researching a purchase, that can mean never visiting a traditional results page at all. The brands the assistant names are the brands that get considered.

Why it matters for sellers

  • Being named in an AI answer is the new version of ranking on page one — except the 'page' is a paragraph with a few citations.
  • The engines overlap only partly: a source cited by Perplexity may be absent from ChatGPT's answer to the same question, so visibility has to be earned across several engines.
  • Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from the same index as classic Search, so ranking organically is still the primary way onto Google's AI surface.
