What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Short answer

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is structuring your content so answer engines — Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, and assistant answers — can lift a clean, direct response straight from your page. In practice that means leading with a concise answer, using question-shaped headings, and presenting comparisons as tables or lists.

AEO vs GEO

The two overlap. AEO is mostly about on-page structure and extractability — making the answer easy to lift. GEO is broader: it also covers the off-site credibility and brand signals that decide whether an engine trusts you enough to cite you in the first place. You want both: be citable (GEO) and be extractable (AEO).

Formats that tend to get extracted

  • A direct, self-contained answer in the first two or three sentences under a heading.
  • Question-shaped H2/H3 headings that mirror how people actually ask.
  • Comparison tables and tight lists for 'X vs Y' or 'best X' intents.
  • Clear definitions and glossary entries for 'what is …' queries.

An honest caveat

Google removed FAQ rich results in 2026, so don't build FAQ schema expecting a search feature — keep any Q&A content for on-page usefulness and extraction instead. The precise formats engines favour also shift over time, so treat format advice as directional and keep the underlying answer genuinely good.
